The statewide Alaska chapter is located at the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, housed under K-12 Outreach. Its purpose is to inspire future teachers from all over Alaska, and provide them guidance on their path to teaching.

This year, the conference was held on March 7 at the University of Alaska Southeast campus in Juneau. Three students from the St. Michael Chapter attended the conference in Juneau. LouAnn Niksik (senior), Mercedes Otten (8th grader) and Patrick Agibinik (junior) competed in the Alaska EdRising Public Speaking Division. All three students were mentored by Teacher Alexis Greene, St. Michael EdRising Chapter Leader. Arie Gurin, a 5th grade teacher in St. Michael served as a chaperone.

Prior to the conference, Mercedes Otten requested a meeting with Representative Neal Foster via email. She met with Rep. Foster on the last day of the competition, March 9. Mercedes sat down with Rep. Foster and asked him several questions regarding his family tree, his time at Stanford University and his future plans for District 39.

While all three participants spoke well and shared intimate testimonies on life in rural Alaska, only LouAnn Niksik and Mercedes Otten placed in the competition. With their success in Juneau, they will compete at the Educators Rising National Conference in Dallas, Texas on June 22, 2019.

Here in St. Michael, we are all proud of our participants and wish them continued success at the national conference in June.
