Another year has passed in the Bering Strait School District. We are once again at Thanksgiving and heading into the Christmas Holiday.
When most of us think of Thanksgiving, we think of our extended families gathered around a large table that is complete with platters of yams and stuffing, potatoes and vegetables, plates of cranberry sauce and pumpkin pies. In the center of the table, we see the turkey, golden brown in Thanksgiving splendor.
In Alaska, that table might also include moose and king crab, but friends and family will nevertheless surround the table of an Alaskan Thanksgiving. It is my hope for all who are far away from home that you are able to gather with new friends and share stories of your families. For the season of Thanksgiving offers us a precious opportunity to draw closer, as we unite in reflecting upon the blessings that flow into our lives.
Let us again remember and give thanks to those Americans who cannot stop what they are doing on Thanksgiving Day, whose duty to country has them standing watch, responding to threats, and assisting those in need here at home and around the world. On this Thanksgiving Day, I am thankful for the privilege of working with such a dedicated and caring community of professionals. Every day, you perform honorably and skillfully, contributing to the mission of BSSD while helping children learn to dream. I am grateful for your service and wish you and all your family and friends a safe and peaceful holiday.
